Grand Knights Message:

Brothers,

The Christmas Season is upon us. “Happy Holidays” is the politically correct greeting for the winter holidays. We as Catholics know in our hearts that without Jesus Christ, our Lord and savior, this season would be meaningless.

Sadly, for many people, Advent and Christmas have become a time of  commercialism and consumerism, beginning in November, and abruptly thrown out on December 26th.

Advent is a time to anticipate and prepare for the coming or Christ our savior. To reflect on what the Church teaches us about the coming of Jesus. Christians believe that the season of Advent serves a dual reminder of the original waiting that was done by the Hebrews for the birth of their Messiah as well as the waiting that Christians today endure as they await the second coming of Jesus.

Christmas is the time when we celebrate the birth of Christ the King, savior of the world. The word "Christmas" is a contraction of two words "Christ's mass". Without Christ there is no Christmas.

A movement to secularize Christmas, and remove any reference to Christ, has been going on for many years. Touted as a form of political correctness, and in an effort to not offend anyone, Christ has been slowly removed from the public meaning of the holiday.

We as Catholics have an obligation to evangelize our brethren. What easier way to spread the word than to wish everyone a “Merry Christmas!!”, especially when we are wished  “Happy Holidays”.

Merry Christmas!

24 Hour Knight

Do you ever read the newsletter and think to yourself “With my busy schedule, how am I going to help with any of these activities?”

Being a member of the Knights of Columbus isn't as time consuming as you may think. We are asking for 24 hours of your time each year in the following manner :

12 hours a year reading the weekly church bulletin, the state and local council newsletters and the monthly Supreme Council magazine, Columbia.

2 hours a year volunteering at a council event of your interest.

2 hours a year attending two council prayer services with your family.

2 hours a year on a council sponsored family project or event.

2 hours a year attending one council meeting.

4 hours a year attending a council social function with their family

Just because we offer numerous opportunities to be involved, does not mean that you need to participate in every one, or a majority. We have many Brother Knights who only help with the Tootsie Roll Drive, or the parish party security detail. Some help with the youth athletic events. Some dedicate their time to Right To Life activities. Your family and your career come first. All we ask is that you give of your time when and where you can, and to keep your dues current. Many Knights decrease their involvement when things become busy in their lives, and then contribute more as their schedule allows.

Look at the activities in December. These are opportunities to become involved just by showing up and having a good time.

Fundraising

Pizza Hut Fundraising night was scheduled for Wednesday November 14th. Thank you to all who attended the event. We had a great showing and the council has an open invitation to schedule another night.

Friday Fish Dinner

Knights of Columbus Councils 12408 and 4188 team up on Friday December 14 2007.

Knights of Columbus Hall
870 N. Main Street, Clawson MI, 48017
(248) 588-3547

Baked Cod, Fried Cod, Crab Cakes, Baked Potatoes, French Fries, Coleslaw, Vegetable, Roll, Coffee Tea or Pop, Dessert

Dinner is served from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM

Please make an effort to attend the Fish Fry’s. Bring your family, or just get a carry out order. Our council receives half of the profit from these events, so every dinner we sell goes to help our bottom line.

State Raffle

By now you should have received your packet of tickets containing this years State Raffle. The list of prizes this year is well worth the small investment of a ticket. You will notice that the format for the tickets this year is different than years past. By providing the tickets on perforated sheets, as opposed to booklets, the Michigan State Council was able to achieve a substantial savings. Another change you will notice, each ticket is bar-coded. In that barcode is the council number, removing the need for people to write it on the ticket. The barcode ensures that an accurate count of the number of tickets sold by each council. Just as in years past, each council will be reimbursed $1.00 for each $5.00 dollar ticket sold.  Additionally, the seller of the Grand Prize ticket will win $1,000.00. If you did not receive your tickets, or if you need more tickets, I do have a few extra sheets of 8.

Our Lady of Charity Icon

February 26, 2008, your council will be hosting one of four icons of Our Lady of Charity, the patron Saint of Cuba as dedicated by Pope John Paul II. We will be holding a Marian Hour of Prayer in place of our 2nd monthly council meeting. More information will be made available as we get closer to the date.

Sweatshirt For Kids

Our Councils participation in the annual “Sweatshirts For Kids” project began November 10 and runs through December 9th. Sweatshirts must be new and have a college or pro sports logo on it. Sizes needed are Large and up. Barrels are out in the Church lobbies on weekends. You may also drop off your sweatshirts to the Rectory during the week. On Sunday December 9th in the youth room, we will have our “wrapping party” for the sweatshirts. Boxes, wrapping paper, tape and help is needed. The party will begin around 12:00. The sweatshirts that have been donated already have been boxed and wrapped, and are being delivered to Bro. Francis at the Winter District Deputy Meeting Dec.1 and 2. It may not be necessary to hold the wrapping party, if we continue to receive a small number of shirts after this weekend.

Parish Turkey Dinner

The 3rd Annual Parish Turkey dinner is being held Saturday December 15th, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM in the Grade School Gymnasium. As in years past, we will begin setting up around 12:00 PM and clean up will follow. $7.00 for Adults and $6.00 for Seniors and Kids under 12. The dinner is open to anyone, so bring your whole family. Please contact PGK John Iannotti at (586)731-1779 or email gmiannotti@comcast.net if you would like to help. Proceeds from this years dinner will benefit the Master Plan.

Thanksgiving Lunch

On Thanksgiving Day, November 22nd, Council’s #12408, and #4188 teamed up with 5 Clawson area Churches and provided a Thanksgiving lunch to Clawson residents that do not have families to share Thanksgiving with; at Fr Lynch Council in Clawson. Thank you to all who helped prepare the meal. We received many compliments on the food, and the leftovers were given to St. Dennis, who feeds the homeless. We were told that just minutes before we delivered the leftovers, St. Dennis ran out of Turkey for their patrons, so it was much appreciated.

Vocations Recognition Dinner

Friday January 18, 2008 we will once again be holding the annual District Vocations Recognition Dinner at the Fr. John M. Lynch Council 4188 Hall in Clawson. Tony Recchia will be coordinating our councils involvement. Additional details will be made available as we get closer to the date.

Dues

Statements will be coming out soon for dues for 2008. Representatives from each council voted at the 2007 Michigan State Convention to increase the per capita taxes by $2.00. What that means to the council is that we now must send $10.00 per member to the state to offset the operating expenses they incur. The council is responsible for paying the per capita for each member, even if that member has not paid their dues. As you can see, we can quickly run into a financial difficulty if we continue to cover those members who have not paid there dues. It is imperative that you return your statements with your payment to the Financial Secretary on time and as soon as possible. Please remember, that you need to be current in your 3rd Degree Dues to be an active member in the 4th Degree.
