Grand Knights Message:

Brother Knights:

It is hard to believe a year has passed. Reflecting back, we have achieved some of our goals and accomplished a lot. Our reputation around the parish is phenomenal and we are becoming known for “getting the job done”.

One of those jobs we have been asked to assist on, is the going away reception for Fr Liberty. As you know, Fr Liberty was selected as Pastor of St Jude parish in Detroit and began his new duties on May 1st. Fr. Liberty has been with our council for a few years, since being assigned to National Shrine of the Little Flower. Fr. Liberty was selected as our council Chaplain. He is also a member of Bishop Gallagher Assembly #0482 and is the Friar of the Assembly. Fr Liberty has been instrumental in helping the council whenever needed. We will miss him. However we have Monsignor Easton and Fr Maka that we can count on for assistance and support.

Vivat Jesu!

Giovanni Iannotti, Grand Knight

Reception Invitation....

Our Council has been requested to assist the Ladies Guild in a going away reception for Fr Liberty. The reception will be from 1:30pm until 4:00 pm on Sunday May 21st at the Shrine Grade School Gym. Help is needed for set-up, serving, and clean-up. We are in need of 6 Knights for Set-up from 11:30 until 1:00pm, 4 Knights to serve from 1:00 – 4:00, and 6 Knights to clean-up from 3:30 until 5:00pm. The Knights are responsible for the set-up, clean-up, hors d'oeuvre for the event. The Ladies Guild will supply the paper products, drinks. If you would like to volunteer to help, please contact John Iannotti at 586-731-1779 or email at gmiannotti@comcast.net

State Convention...............

The annual State Convention is in a few weeks. Your delegates attending are John Iannotti, & Mark Palmer. Fr Maka will also be making the trip this year to the Island. This year our council will be donating 2 baskets for the silent auction. The first will be “Wines of the World” and the second will be “Out to Lunch”. The first is self explanatory but the second will consist of gift certificates from various fast food restaurants. Please contact Pat Iannotti at 586-731-1779 to help out. Help is needed to put the baskets together and purchase items.

Council Officer Nominations...

Officer nominations will be conducted at our meeting on May 9th. Officer elections will be held on June 13th. If you can not make the nomination meeting, please make plans now to attend the election in June. You will be able to help determine your Council leadership for next year.

Fundraising……

Saturday April 29th, our Council held our first Parish pasta dinner. The dinner was a success; we were able to make a profit of $171.00.  Although it was successful, participation from members of the council was disappointing.

We have been blessed with the opportunity to partner with Council #4188 in Clawson in their fish fry dinners. This year, our council received $1600.00 as our portion of the proceeds. The Fish Fry’s will resume again in the fall, and again we will be requesting your support. A big thank you goes out to all members who were committed and helped out in the kitchen, serving, setting up and cleaning up. A thank you as well to those members who showed up and had dinner.

We have been making efforts to raise funds to help those in need that come to use seeking assistance. We need people to help with these fund raisers. Give us a little of your time, either to assist us with the preparation, or come out and support you Brother Knights by participating in these events. We need your participation to make them work.  When you support our fundraisers, you help us help those less fortunate than us.

We have been presented with opportunities to raise significantly more money, in some cases thousands of dollars, through activities such as concession sales at Michigan International Speedway and Ford Field, activates which require 10-12 people per event. We are losing opportunities to raise money because we have been reluctant to commit our council, based on past participation, which is a sad commentary.

If you have any ideas for fundraising  that you would like to present, and are willing to take charge of from planning to execution, please come to a council meeting and share the idea with us.

Mark L. Palmer, Deputy Grand Knight

Fund Raising Opportunity....

Our Council has been asked to run a concession stand for “Paws for Cause” on August 12th at Starr Park in Royal Oak. The Council will keep 85% of proceeds raised. Contact Mark Palmer at 248-588-3469 or email mark_l_palmer@hotmail.com for more information.

Corporate Communions…..

Please make plans to attend Mass during our Corporate Communions. The next Mass is scheduled for Saturday May 20th at the 8:30 am Mass for Armed Forces day and in June, our Corporate Communion is on Sunday June 11th at the 10:45 am Mass. Please put them on your schedule now.

Just What is Corporate Communion?......by Brother Terry Kilbride

The word corporate by definition is a united group.  The Knights of Columbus celebrate a Corporate Communion to bring all Knights together to demonstrate unity for the celebration of the Mass and Eucharist.  The Assembly Color Corp participates so it is a very festive occasion. The council at the National Shrine of the Little Flower has over 100 Knights.  We encourage all to make these events a future priority.
