From The Grand Knight..

There is so much to reflect upon over the last fraternal year I am not sure where to start and if I did, there would not be enough room to say it all. I will reflect on a few things. Our council has experienced ups and downs over the last 12 months. There have been more good things than bad. If you recall we talked about goals when the fraternal year began. I am proud to say most of those goals have been achieved. The Degree Team certification, MI Achievement Award, RSVP, MI Drive, Star Council and an increase in participation. These goals were not achieved by just one or two members, but by each of you.

Unfortunately for us this year, we had three of our council brothers go home to God. Frank Ward and Ronald Alexander in February and of course our beloved Financial Secretary, John Kelly in June. We all took the passing of John very hard, but he would want us to continue our work and yes there is still work to be done. As the fraternal year begins, new goals are being set. Some of those goals may seem a little mountainous to climb, but if we work together, conceive it, believe in it, we can achieve it.

I will end this article with this thought:

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the "Peanuts" comic strip. You don't have to actually answer the questions. Just read straight through, and you'll get the point.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners
.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winner for best actor and actress.

6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?
The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.

Happy Birthday …

Birthdays for July 2006

Edmund Ross

Gerard Baltrusaitis

Paul Cheff

Gregory Heidel

Mark Palmer

If we missed your birthday, let us know.

Parish Gardens…..

Our council is once again responsible for the flowers around the front of the Church in front of the grotto. Let’s all take a few minutes to keep the area tidied up during the summer. Our council has the biggest and most visible area of responsibility.

Blood Donation………

If you periodically give blood, contact Mark Palmer and let him know your schedule. Every time a member of the council donates blood, it needs to be recorded so  reports can be submitted quarterly to the state. When you come back from giving blood, contact Mark and let him know.  You can contact Mark at 248-588-3469 or mark_l_palmer@hotmail.com

Insurance Corner……

YOUR BUSINESS BELONGS HERE

Do you know that the Knights of Columbus can offer you IRA’s and Keogh Plans?  Do you know enough about them to decide whether they fit into your financial picture?

I would like you to answer three questions:

  1. Are you, like most people, interested in saving money?

  2. Do you find it difficult to save under common saving methods?

  3. Take the number of years you’ve been working times your average salary.  What percentage of that income have you saved so far?  How much will you save in the future?

If your answers bother you, I would like the chance to sit and talk with you (and your wife, of course) about our alternatives—annuities and tax-sheltered savings at highly competitive interest rates.  You need not look anywhere else but your own Order for your financial needs.  Other institutions bombard you with ads for business.  We just keep doing what we have been doing since Father McGivney founded the Order—taking care of our members and their families.

Call me today.  I want to hear from you.

Joe Jackman, Your Field Agent 248-514-6264

May They Rest in Peace………

With the passing of 3 of our Brother Knights this year, I would suggest that each of you take a few minutes to say the following prayer:

Prayer of  St. Gertrude the Great

Our Lord dictated the following prayer to St. Gertrude the Great to release 1,000 Souls from Purgatory each time it is said.

"Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen."

Approval and recommendation (sgd.) M. Cardinal Pahiarca at Lisbon, Portugal, on March 4, 1936.

Prayer for the Canonization of Father Michael J. McGivney

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request.) Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
