From The Grand Knight…

LET’S REACH FOR THE STARS!!!!!!!

Last month I stated in my column that we will be setting goals this year and some may seem mountainous but by believing and working together, we can achieve them. I would like to share some of those goals;

  • Develop a mentoring program for council officers. We need to prepare officers for the next level and we need to prepare members to become council officers in the future.

  • Continue to serve God, the Church and Parish community.

  • Become a valuable Parish organization that will be an asset for Monsignor.

  • Develop a blood donation program.

  • Conduct fundraising events, such as dinners, bus trips, etc… to raise money for the council and charities we support.

  • Conduct another successful MI drive; possibly even two this fraternal year (one in the fall and the other in the spring).

  • Reach our membership and insurance goal before the end of the calendar year (December) and exceed our membership percent over last fraternal year.

  • Qualify for the Michigan Achievement Award, Columbian Award, Star Council and Supreme Star Council.

  • Continue our service programs such as Backpack for kids, Sweatshirts for kids, etc….

These are just a few of the goals for the council that we can focus on. As the year progresses, there will be changes and adjustments, one thing we all know is that things change. One of those changes is council officers. Please make every effort to attend our Officer installation on August 8th beginning at 7:30pm in the Church. Afterward there will be a reception in the conference center. Please mark it on your calendars. At this year’s installation besides the installing of the officers, there will be special presentations to include the announcement of Family, Knight and Youth of the year. This year was a very tough decision, so many of you excelled and every one of you deserve it, but we had to narrow it down to one. In my opinion, you are ALL Knights of the Year.

Congratulations to Joseph Guarino. We received the “Official” notification of the appointment of Joe as Financial Secretary, effective July 10th, 2006.

Nominations are open for Recorder. If you would like to nominate an individual, please contact Grand Knight John Iannotti 586-731-1779 or gmiannotti@comcast.net.

Council Summer Picnic….

Make plans now to attend our annual summer picnic at brother Brian Malover's house on Saturday August 26th beginning at 1pm. Bring a dish to pass and bring the family.

Dream Cruise Weekend……

Our Council has once again been asked to provide Security for the Dream Cruise Parish Party on Friday August 18, 2006. We will need people to help from 3 – 10 PM.  We are going need 4-6 people to be on duty at a time. As in years past, we would like to schedule people for shifts of 2 – 3 hours. Also, we are going to be providing Parking Security for the Roseland Parking Lot for the 4:00 and 6:00 PM Masses Saturday August 19, 2006. Again we will need 4 to 6 people for each mass. Contact Mark Palmer at 248-588-3469 or mark_l_palmer@hotmail.com to volunteer.

Phone Tree…..

Thanks to the efforts of Brother Knight Terry Kilbride, the council now has a current phone tree.  If you have been selected as a phone tree Captain, it is vital that you contact the individuals on your list. This is one way of mass communication to members for notification of death of members, major events that assistance is needed

Fund Raising Opportunity

Our Council has been asked to run a concession stand for “Paws with a Cause” on August 12th at Starr Park in Royal Oak. We will need approximately 10 people to assist with concession sales, set up and cleanup from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. The Council will keep 85% of proceeds raised. Contact Mark Palmer at 248-588-3469 or mark_l_palmer@hotmail.com for more information.

One of the State Archdiocese directors has made arrangements for fund raising through Ford Field at Detroit Lions home games. There is a need for 20 Knights to man the concession stand at the events. The proceeds will go toward Angels Way. If you would like to help, contact DD Frank Roche at 248-435-4717.

Happy Birthday …

Birthdays for August 2006

Daniel Stock

Larry Cavanaugh

Steve Utrup

Bryan Laginess

If we missed your birthday, let us know.

Right to Life Crosses…..

On Saturday September 30th, the Right to Life crosses will be set up on the lawn of the Church. This begins at 0930 and usually only takes a couple of hours. Tear down will be on October 10th. Contact Sam Mannino to volunteer to help.

An Economic MUST…..

Do you have seat belts in your car?  Of course you do!  How many do you have?  Aren’t you certain that you have one for every member of your family?  Would you buy an automobile that only provided one “belt”—that being for you?

But would you believe that family after family with whom I visit are running along with the one “belt” of insurance on the father.  Somehow, the common opinion seems to be that death will strike only the father—not the mother.

Today, insuring your wife’s life is an economic must.  With “wife insurance,” should death occur, you have a fighting chance to retain at least a semblance of a home for your children.

Call me today to discuss these needs.

July Recognitions…….

KNIGHT OF THE MONTH: Br. John Naranjo

FAMILY OF THE MONTH:  Aaron & Denise Dean

Soccer Challenge…

The Detroit Archdiocese Soccer Competition will be on Saturday October 7th at Shrine High School. The council competition will be held in mid September, a date is still being considered. Last year our competitors from Shrine won State level awards. If you would like to volunteer to help, contact Norm Brault at 248-398-1737.

Parish Gardens…..

Our council is once again responsible for the flowers around the front of the Church in front of the grotto. Let’s all take a few minutes to keep the area tidied up during the summer. Our council has the biggest and most visible area of responsibility.

Blood Donation………

If you periodically give blood, contact Mark Palmer and let him know your schedule. Every time a member of the council donates blood, it needs to be recorded so reports can be submitted quarterly to the state. When you come back from giving blood, contact Mark and let him know.  You can contact Mark at 248-588-3469 or mark_l_palmer@hotmail.com

State Raffle….

Be looking for State Raffle tickets in your mailboxes in the next couple of months. Last years raffle was a success, but this year the State council would like to surpass last years totals. Remember for each book sold, the council will receive $5.00 back. So when you get them, sell, sell, and sell.

Backpack for Kids…..

Our annual Backpack for Kids project will be beginning on August 5th. The donation barrels will be in the Church. I am asking every Knight to check the barrels when they attend Masses. If there are any backpacks, you can drop them off to the Rectory. During the week donations will need to be dropped off at the Rectory. The Rectory will be temporarily holding them for us and they will be picked up on a regular basis.

Holy Cross Children Services…………..

Once again our council has Holy Cross calendars to sell. They are $25.00 each. There will be daily and monthly drawings for money prizes. If you would like to purchase one of these calendars, please contact our Chancellor John Snyder at 248-588-8741.

Mark it on your calendars now…..on Wednesday October 10th, Brother Frances will be coming to Shrine to talk about Holy Cross Children services and a project they are going to undertake. This discussion will be open to the parish. We are hoping for a large turnout for this event. If you would like more information, contact DD Frank Roche at 248-435-4717.

2006 Prep Bowl….

The Annual Catholic League Championship games will be held at Ford Field in October. Our council will be receiving tickets soon. We need to return any unsold tickets. So make sure if you buy a ticket you go.
