Armed Forces Tribute Mass . . . . May 15 Saturday, May 15 is Armed Forces Day. We will have a Corporate Communion at the 6:00p Mass. This will be in honor of those members of the parish who serve in the military or who have family members in our armed services. Reserve seating will be available. Please join us to give Thanks and Hopeful Prayer for the safe return of our troops and recognize their patriotism.
Garden Party . . . . May 14 / 22 / 23 Make it a family affair to help the Shrine Garden Club spruce up the parish grounds with spring plantings and grounds cleanup. Let's make an impressive presentation to all who pass by or visit our parish. If you have personal pride in our parish, meet behind the grotto between the garages. Following is the crew schedule: Friday, May 14 - 9:30a - 12:30p (Bed Prep) Saturday, May 22 - 9:30a - 12:30p Sunday, May 23 - 2:00p - 5:00p 3:00p (Life Tree Dedication) 4:00p (Bar-B-Que) The Knights are participating with the Adopt-A-Garden plan and will take care of the front lawn area of the church. We are also sponsoring the 4:00p BBQ on Sunday.
Life Tree Memorial Dedication . . . . May 23 Following the gardening work on Sunday, May 23 at 3:00p the Knights will dedicate the engraved rock dedicating the "Right To Life" tree we planted the previous Spring. Fr. Liberty will preside over the ceremony. Our color guard will be present to add solemnity for the ceremony. The Bar-B-Que will immediately follow.
Michigan State Convention . . . . May 27 - 29 The annual convention of the Michigan State Council Knights of Columbus will take place on May 27-29 at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. Representing our council as a voting delegate in this year's state elections will be Grand Knight Richard Tschirhart. At the convention several resolutions will be passed as guidelines for the upcoming fraternal year. We will also elect a new State Deputy to replace retiring State Deputy George Dann.
Ordination . . . Siaosi Patau . . . . May 29 Brother Knights, celebrate! We are pleased to announce the ordination of brother knight Siaosi Patau. Siaosi is a Third Degree Member of our council. We sponsored him through the K of C Vocations Awareness Program (RSVP) last year. He will receive the sacrament of Holy Orders from His Eminence Cardinal Adam J. Maida, Archbishop of Detroit, on Saturday, May 29, 2004 at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Detroit. The service starts at 10:00a. A reception will follow. All members of the council are encouraged to attend.
Mass of Thanksgiving . . . . May 30 Fr. Patau will celebrate his first Mass at Shrine the day after his ordination. He will be presiding over the 10:45a Mass on Sunday, May 30. The K of C 4th Degree Color Guard from Bishop Gallagher Assembly in Clawson, MI will support this celebration of faith. A reception will follow the Mass in Seton Hall. It is open to all members of the council and parish. The Ladies Auxiliary will be working with the Shrine Ladies Guild to plan the reception. All council families are encourage to attend either the Mass or reception. It is important that we show support for vocations.
Memorial Day Parade . . . . May 31 We will be marching in the Royal Oak Memorial Day Parade this year. We will meet at the Farmer's Market parking lot in downtown Royal Oak around 8:30a on Monday, May 30. Children of council members are encouraged to march with us. Ladies are also welcome. This is a day we reflect on the sacrifices our veterans made. Their great act of charity insures that we continue to enjoy the many freedoms we have today. Please join us!
Election of Officers . . . . June 8 New members! Old members! Throw your hat into the ring and become a highly involved member of the Knights of Columbus. Volunteer for nomination to any of our Council Officer positions or volunteer for one of the numerous appointed positions available. You joined, now become involved! Our council election will be held at our 7:30p meeting on Tuesday, June 8.
Corpus Christi Celebration . . . . June 12 On Sunday, June 13, Corpus Christi Sunday, our council will hold Corporate Communion at the 6:00p Mass. We will honor the institution of the Eucharist. After Mass there will be a procession out of the St. Therese Chapel, along 12 Mile Road to the outdoor altar in the garden. We will have outdoor veneration of the Most Blessed Sacrament. This corporate communion will be supported by the K of C 4th Degree Color Guards from Bishop Gallagher Assembly in Clawson and Msgr John Doyle Assembly in Southfield.
Marriage Protection . . . . Sign a Petition ! A petition drive to legally define marriage as a union between one man and one woman is circulating through the parish. This petition will put the proposal to ban same sex marriages on the ballot this November. The people of the State of Michigan will then be asked to vote in favor of making it illegal to perform or be a member of a same sex marriage. It will protect the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman. Catholics in the Public Square is in need of volunteers after all Masses on the weekend of May 15-16 and May 22-23 to gather signatures. If you can help for 10-15 minutes please report to the usher's room just before Mass ends to get your clipboard. Contact Brother Knight Joseph Chase.
MR Drive Results . . . Congratulations Brother Knights, ladies and students! Your efforts for our 2004 Annual MR Drive were a blazing success! This year we raised $6650. from our tootsie roll sale. This is a $1650. increase over the previous year. Next year the tootsie roll sale will have a new name. It will be called M. I. Drive or Mentally Impaired Drive. This year we have voted to distribute the money we raised three ways. The organizations that will be receiving a donation are: Mary's Children, a Catholic residential care facility for mentally impaired young adults and children at the Guardian Angels Parish in Clawson, MI. Royal Oak Schools, in support of Lincoln Center, an organization that works with young children that have learning disabilities and Kimball High School Special Ed - Dave Potter's Kids, in support of vocational training for mentally challenged teens. Rose Hill, a group home in Holly, MI that works with rehabilitating mentally impaired children and adults.
Fish Fry's . . . Our partnering effort with Fr. Lynch Council #4188 to host the Lenten Friday Fish Fry's has come to a close. This venture with our brother council has added $1200. to our council treasury. The hard work of our members is to be noted. The following brothers have shown extreme dedication to our cause: John Iannotti & Family Eugene Bienkowski Mark Palmer Tony Recchia Steve Fox We wish to thank Fr. Lynch Council for this opportunity and all the patrons who supported our efforts by dining.
St. Louis Toy Drive . . . Our toy drive has officially ended. We are making plans to car pool to St. Louis Center in Chelsea, MI on a weekend in June. We will present the toys at that time. We would like to thank those who made cash donations to this cause, especially Eddie and Jennifer Orow from Farmington Hills, MI. They purchased a gift certificate from Target Stores and donated it to our cause.
Jail Ministry . . . In the upcoming weeks we will be working with Sister Peggy in support of the jail ministry. We will be collecting backpacks for the children who have parents who are incarcerated. These children will now be able to visit their relatives and bring books, crafts, handiwork etc. to share with the relative. Collection points will be established at the church entrances.
